Background:
Built in 1893, Witton Church has a long tradition of serving the community in the parish of St Helen, Witton and St Thomas, Rudheath. A new wooden multi-purpose block was added in 1980 and further additions to the original accommodation have included a separate mobile nursery building in 1990 and a mobile classroom in 1998. There are 'extensive' grounds to the rear, which include a Japanese garden, sensory area, woodland, quiet picnic area on the junior playground and a separate infant play area. The school, which is over-subscribed at present, was awarded Beacon school status in 1999 for pupil behaviour and attendance, self-evaluation, monitoring of pupil and staff progress and other factors. A 'very good' range of extra-curricular activities includes art, football, design technology, gym, choir, recorders, drama, country dancing, guitar and woodwind tuition. Pupils also have opportunities to enter many competitions and are 'successful' in gaining awards from the London Academy of Music, Drama and Art. There are 'strong, well established' links with the community through two local homes for the elderly and a centre for handicapped adults. The school also supports the local church and, as a millennium project, designed a stained glass window. Several charities, including one that supports Mexican street children, are aided through a number of fundraising events each year. Witton Church enjoys strong support from parents who are 'fully involved' in the life of the school. Witton Church Walk School aim is to interpret human knowledge to it's pupils in the light of Gospel.
