Background:

Moss Hey opened in 1964 and amalgamated as a primary school in 1985. It is a one-form entry school with a unit for 10 learning disordered children. The school is set in 'large' grounds with netball courts, football pitches and a wildlife area. It was recognised as a 'particularly successful school' by the Chief Inspector for Schools in 1998 and was awarded Beacon School status in 1999. Since then the school has been running seminars and 'sharing weeks' for staff from other schools. Although a relatively small school, it offers a 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities and has a 'large number' of community links. These include participation in a wide variety of sporting competitions with 'good success', computer, newspaper, science and gymnastic clubs. The school has an 'excellent and thriving' band which plays at fund-raising community events. Apart from brass tuition, pupils can also learn the flute, recorder, guitar, keyboard, drums and clarinet. French tuition is offered on a fee-paying basis. The school has a 'flourishing' out of hours school club Parental partnership is a 'key feature' of the school with parents helping in class and on visits, running the parent-teacher association, participating in the management of the school and taking part in family assemblies. The school accommodates a 'successful' private nursery which works in close liason with the reception class. Pupils are 'actively encouraged' to think of the needs of the wider environment and 'enthusiastically hold fundraising events for a wide range of local and national charities'.
