Background:
The first community high school to be built by Wigan education authority, Lowton was opened in 1977. The over-subscribed school serves Lowton St Mary's, Lowton St Luke's and parts of Golborne and Leigh. The 'attractive and innovative' architectural design is along the lines of a small village, comprising 10 separate teaching blocks, a 'large' sports hall, drama studio, lecture theatre, music suite, information technology suite and community bar. Plans for a new science bock are being considered. Classrooms are carpeted and equipped 'to the highest standards'. The grounds boast floodlit all-weather tennis courts/multi-sports areas. Extra support is offered within the curriculum to pupils with Special Educational Needs. The school's careers programme includes work experience and practice job interviews for upper school students, while there are 'close' links with industry. The school has won a Powergen Award for School Science and a Schools Curriculum Award.
