Background:

Opened in 1938, the school is housed in a horseshoe-shaped building in a relatively affluent area. Facilities include a new early year's unit, consisting of a nursery and a reception classroom, which opened in 1996. As an Eco School, it has been involved with the WWF and the Global Sustainable Cities projects. It has installed Solar Panels with Government Grants and has numerous ongoing Energy Efficiency/Environmental Projects, including the construction of two 'Outdoor Classrooms' for curriculum work (including science activities) and for the general enjoyment of the children. Other notable features are a 'beautifully-equipped' library and 'extensive' playing fields and grounds. The school has a 'high profile' sports department with links to Manchester City Football Club, which provides football coaching. Close links with the local secondary school, which has sports college status, also encourage this. Other sports range from swimming, lacrosse and rugby to netball and short tennis. The school choir takes part in the annual Primary Arts Festival at Ashton on Mersey, and pupils have the opportunity of recorder and guitar lessons. Woodheys has 'high standing in the local community' and an 'excellent' parents association. Many parents help in school, assisting with computer work, art, reading, science and a wide range of support activities. The school opened a new computer suite with 17 personal computers in 2001, and it hosts computer training for parents in school time. Pupils are encouraged to raise funds for local and national charities. The school has Investor in People status and won Eco awards in 1999 and 2000, and a DFEE Achievement Award for Excellence in 2001 in recognition of its impressive SATS results between 1997 and 2000. 'A disciplined and ordered environment based on providing stimulating lessons to keep pupils working with interest. 'Each staff and pupils approach each task with the words of the school motto in mind, together everyone achieves more. Their effect is reflected in the dedication of the staff and the achievements of the children and support of parents.
