Background:

Built in 1961, the school is set in 'very attractive and extensive grounds which are constantly being improved'. The school pond, which is used as a resource by all children, was a community project involving parents and friends of the school. The latest addition to the playground is a basket ball post as well as mini goal posts which are used every playtime. The school offers 'extensive' extra-curricular activities including country dancing, maypole dancing, sporting clubs and sign language club as well as the study of recorder, all brass instruments, woodwind, percussion and keyboard. The school band offers children the opportunity to play together and perform in the community, in particular at the annual Mayoress's charity concert. There are 'strong' connections with Manchester Metropolitan University where the school has been involved in research with dyslexia and gifted children. 'Orrishmere school aims to provide a stimulating and interesting environment in which children are encouraged to reach their full potential as members of a secure, happy and caring community'.
