Background:
Formed from Hartford Secondary Moderns for Boys and Girls in 1978, this comprehensive serves Hartford, Winnington and Barnton, with about three in 10 pupils coming from outside the catchment area. It is not over-subscribed. The school occupies a split-site on a 123-acre campus shared with other schools. On-site facilities include a running track, several soccer pitches, hockey/rugby pitches, tennis courts, two libraries, halls, gymnasiums, eight laboratories, and a drama studio. There are also three networked computer suites and the school offers to build computers to parents' or pupils' specifications for private use. The school has schemes in place to assist its most and least able pupils: high achievers can take advanced lessons, enter exams early or be promoted to the next year-group, while lower achievers can receive individual or in-lesson support. 'We accept pupils with physical disabilities, although there are no special facilities for them.' There is a ten subject GCSE course with a 'wide choice' of subjects. Three modern languages are taught in all Years. Pupils participate in two weeks' work experience in Year 10 and receive a 'full' careers education in Years 9 to 11. There is also an opportunity to do a work experience placement in France. 'Regular' successes are achieved in competitive sports, and the 'wide' range of out-of-school activities also promotes music. Pupils are involved in a 'full' programme of concert, drama, dance, art and fashion events. 'In an ordered atmosphere of disciplined study, high expectation and strong pastoral support, pupils seek and achieve academic success regardless of personal disadvantage, physical disability, or prior achievement'.
