Background:
Although the original junior school dates back to 1906, Penketh Primary was created in 1994 following the amalgamation of separate infant and junior schools. The school is sited in a 'pleasant' building adjacent to Stokes Lane, Penketh and has 'extensive' grounds including a large playing field, 'numerous' tarmac yards, small wooded areas and a wildlife pond. The school is 'popular in the local area'. It aims to provide 'high quality teaching and resources for pupils in order that they can develop academically, socially, physically and morally to their full potential'. The school offers a 'broad, balanced, challenging curriculum, which emphasises the central importance of reading, writing and mathematics'. For the last four years, it has received a certificate of distinction from Education Extra for its 'outstanding scheme of after-school activities and commitments to the educational experience of young people'. These include art, French, recorders, chess, badminton, brass and fun science among others. In recent years the school has won the Warrington Netball Cup, the schools seven-a-side rugby league trophy at Warrington Wolves RCFC and appeared in the county kwik-cricket finals. The school also has a 'good reputation' for music and the choir has performed at numerous concerts. Pupils regularly raise funds for a variety of local and national charities.
