Background:

Founded in 1946 by the Christian Brothers Congregation as independent grammar school in leafy Manchester suburb; became grant-maintained in 1997; voluntary-aided status from September 1999. Strong emphasis on religious education: 'We strive together to make real in our lives and in the world the values of the gospel of Jesus Christ.' Consistently one of top Catholic day schools in the country for A-level results. New design and technology block built in 1999; new classrooms, science laboratory and language laboratory in 2000. Increasing numbers in the sixth form; all boys take 10 GCSEs; three sciences offered to all pupils as well as double award science; Latin taught. Extensive grounds include swimming pool, tennis courts, rugby and football pitches. Many boys represent county at rugby.
