Background:

Opened in 1874 as an all-age Church of England school; alterations made in 1960s when Wistaston Parish, south-west of Crewe, grew rapidly; extra accommodation provided additional classrooms, offices, kitchen and hall; further extension copmrising classroom, cloakroom and practical area in 1994; new classroom and cloakroom completed in 1996; library also re-established. Wistaston Westfield Infant School opened on same campus in 1975. Homework set throughout the school; children expected to read at home every evening; every child encouraged to learn number bonds, tables and spellings each week. 'Tremendous' support from Friends of Wistaston Junior School; activities include beetle drive, quiz night, children's disco and summer fayre. Sports: football, netball, cricket, bowls and athletics. Music includes piano, violin, brass and woodwind tuition, keyboard clubs, recorder groups, orchestra and choir. Extra-curricular activities: science club, ICT club, mathematics club, chess club and cycle training. Artsmark Gold (2004); Basic Skills Quality Mark; DfES achievement award (2000, 2001, 2003).
