Background:
Situated in delightful Cheshire village; occupies original premises, built in 1854 and now a Grade II listed building. Junior school has five classrooms, well-stocked library and computer suite; infants' department has two classroom areas and general purpose area. New octagonal hall in 1990; additional classroom areas, toilets and cloakrooms in 2000 and 2003. Separate building houses Alderley Edge Playgroup. Large playground marked out for team games and playtime activities; new playground equipment installed in 1999 and 2005, and new playground in 2003 with help of parent-teacher association fundraising. Over-subscribed. Football, cricket, rounders, athletics and tag rugby; also dance, art, cross-country, ICT and environmental club. Large playing field to rear of school, which, together with a recently-built assembly hall, provides facilities for football, netball, hockey, short tennis, rounders, cricket, cross-country, gymnastics and athletics. Close links with the local tennis club. Outstanding environmental area, described as 'exciting outdoor classroom, with its own well-stocked pond and variety of habitats to explore within stunning woodland'. Music is one of the school's strengths; specialist teacher provides 'unique musical experiences'; 60-strong orchestra. Performing arts are given a high priority. Many after-school clubs organised by teaching staff, including football, netball, cricket, rounders, tag rugby, environment, art, and drama. Frequent fundraising activities for charities such as RSPB, donkey sanctuaries, and Cancer Research; school supports worldwide, national and local charities.
