Background:

Founded in 1912; occupies 28-acre site in leafy suburb to south of Altrincham and bordering Cheshire countryside; 20 acres of playing fields and conservation area with pond and woodland. Buildings extended in 1938 and 1960; currently being developed and upgraded further; new sports facilities due for completion in 2007. Only state school in Greater Manchester to offer Latin and Greek to A-level; also offers 25 subjects at AS/A2 level on free-option choice. Music and wide range of extra-curricular activities 'flourish'; sport also strong; North West hockey champions (2006). Programme of learning support is offered across a range of areas. School prides itself on charity fundraising and community service; runs 'full programme' of social action, helping elderly and handicapped, and maintaining close ties with neighbouring schools. Specialist language college status from September 2003; 'fast-tracking' for GCSE languages in Year 10; pupils may study Chinese, Arabic or Russian as extra language; two-week immersion course in Shanghai, sponsored by British Council, with small cost to parents. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 4.30pm. Over-subscribed, with nearly four applications per place. DfES achievement award (2003).
