Background:

The school was established in 1932 to serve the then National Children's Home and Orphanage in Frodsham. At one time 80% of the pupils were in the care of the local authority, mainly from Liverpool and Manchester. In 1985 the children's home closed but the nursery that was added in the seventies remained. Since then, there has been a development of new housing within Kingsley, from which most of the pupils come. There are seven classes and the school is situated in 'extensively developed' grounds. There are 'established' woodland areas on the site together with a large and enclosed pond. Bird boxes and bird tables are also provided at sites adjacent to the buildings. The school offers a 'broad curriculum' as well as an 'extremely wide range' of extra-curricular activities. The range of sports offered includes netball, rounders, football, short tennis, hockey, badminton, athletics, gymnastics and sailing. Tuition in the flute, recorder and guitar is offered, and there is also a 'thriving' young ornithologist club, sign language club, library club and French language club. Older pupils are involved in a programme of residential visits, usually in the form of three camping weekends a year and a longer stay in a hotel in an urban centre such as London or York, or at an activity/adventure centre. In 1992 the school was asked to house a total communication unit for profoundly deaf children who require sign language. Pupils can therefore commence their education from the age of three through sign language and have some integration into the mainstream.
