Background:

Sutton High School was originally built in 1954 as a co-educational secondary modern school. In 1960 the girls' school built on same site; in 1974 the comprehensive school was established with a new technology block. In 2003 the old part of the school was re-built and converted into a community arts block. The school itself has many facilities: seven laboratories; two business studies rooms including keyboard facilities; five fully equipped craft, design and technology rooms; one graphic design room; two modern food technology rooms; three art rooms; six computer areas - PC based and fully networked; sports hall, gymnasium, tennis courts; floodlit all-weather astroturf pitch; health and fitness suite; refurbished changing areas; spacious playing fields; learning resource centre including careers reference, computers and library; assembly hall and stage; two drama studios, two dance studios. Sports facilities include: grass playing fields for football, rugby, hockey, athletics, cricket and rounders; three hard netball courts, four tennis courts; a fully equipped gymnasium; a large sports hall; a full sized floodlit all-weather Astroturf pitch; health and fitness suite; all-weather cricket nets. The school's examination results are very good. It is nationally recognised as being a centre of excellence for VCE Advanced Art. In May 2002 it was successful in achieving Artsmark Gold. In 1997, Sutton High School became one of the first schools in the country to gain the Sportsmark Award. 'Sutton is a caring school. It sees each pupil as a person with individual needs requiring specific attention and the staff are dedicated to bringing out the best in each pupil'.
