Background:

Opened in April 1974 in the southwest corner of Lymm; Cherry Tree Primary School is housed in a semi-open-plan building containing seven separate teaching areas, library, hall, and information and communication technology suite. All teaching areas are spacious, light, bright and well-furnished. The school'stands on a site that provides outdoor playing, working and seating areas and the large school field, used for sports or games events, is marked with two football pitches in the winter and a running track and rounders pitch in the summer; also sandpit for jumping. Also, land on west side of the building is an outdoor environmental area. About 60 per cent of pupils come from the immediate area, the remainder travelling from further afield. In addition to a broad and balanced curriculum, a wide range of extra-curricular activities are organised. Children are also given opportunities to interact with those from other schools through teams for football, netball, kwik cricket and swimming. The children regularly take part in local festivals/parades and sing in a choir at the MEN Arena. The school won the Basic Skills Quality Mark Award in 2003. 'This is a school where children are encouraged to think for themselves, to ask questions, to contribute ideas and to take some responsibility for their own learning'.
