Background:

Originally built in the 1930s in a suburban area of south Manchester, the school became a secondary modern after the Second World War, then a comprehensive in 1972. A further re-organisation in 1991 resulted in an increase in Year 7 admissions to 270 and the sixth-form being phased out. A three-year building programme has resulted in improvements and the school being adapted to cater for disabled pupils. It is over-subscribed, with 280 applications for 270 places. Five modern languages are offered - French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian - and the school has had language college status since September 1997. It is also 'strong' in music and art and achieves 'consistently outstanding' English examination results. The school won the 1993 Times Education Supplement Award for governors' report to parents, and achieved the Investor in People Award in October 1996. 'The school has a supportive, friendly, hard-working atmosphere, where all students are equally valued (as well as having equal opportunities). Increasingly, students are being involved in areas of school life through year and school councils'.
