Background:

Worthington Primary is situated in a suburban area of Trafford. Two thirds of pupils come from privately owned housing and up to a third from a nearby council estate. Built in 1905 as the first council school in Cheshire, it has since had 'many' improvements such as new toilets, cloakrooms, lighting, floorboards, central heating, suspended ceilings, draught-proofing, utility sinks in all classrooms and increased security measures. A nursery department with 52 places was opened in 1991. The school is over-subscribed with an average of 48 children applying for 35 places. Facilities include two areas of asphalt playing space, one marked as a netball pitch, and a 'large' field, big enough to contain two fotball pitches and a sports pavillion. Extra-curricular activities include football and netball. The school has 'strong links' with other schools, local residents, the police, fire service and St John's Ambulance. Pupils are encouraged to raise funds for charity.
