Background:
Built in 1971 towards edge of large village of Culcheth; semi-open plan in design, with spacious grounds that are used as a learning resource. The curriculum is shaped to meet individual needs. 'Stimulating but orderly' learning environment encourages pupils to become independent in their learning. Thriving orchestra and a choir; both perform regularly at school and in public. Professional coaches train older pupils in rugby, cricket and short tennis; Year 4 children take a course in swimming and water safety. Year 6 pupils can participate in an outdoor pursuits weekend. Regular after-school activities include cookery, gardening, ballet, technical lego and chess. Parent-teacher association raises funds for the school; children are encouraged to support various charities throughout the year. Headteacher aims to make the school approachable for everyone. Before-school care, planned for 2007; children taken by bus to after-school club. Over-subscribed, with 1.5 applications per place. Investor in People status (2004).
