Background:
Opened in 1867, the school moved to its present premises in 1914, located close to the Peak District National Park and public transport into Manchester. Romiley village has a range of thriving community organisations and the school is at the heart of the community. Facilities at the school include a recently-built learning resource centre, incorporating an ICT suite, resourced largely by funds raised by the Friends of Romiley Primary School. A large school field offers excellent sporting facilities, in addition to a wildlife area. Children can choose from a wide range of competitive sport including swimming, cross-country, netball, football, rounders, cricket and athletics. The school offers a broad curriculum which enables children to develop a wide range of skills. Spanish and French are offered to upper juniors and children at Key Stage 2 are organised into a sets structure for core subjects, which has contributed to the school achieving a very high level of Level 5s. The school has a prestigious music room used to develop a wide range of musical skills. The accomplished brass band, with a range of instruments, has recorded a CD and played at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall annually in recent years. In addition there are recorder groups and a large choir. Strong links with the local community include churches, the Rotary, care organisations and local charities, and the school adopts a local charity every year. Its long-established before- and after-school care facilities are run by a highly professional nursery organisation from 7.30am and to 6pm. Parents and governors are actively involved in the life of the school promoting its aim of offering a 'secure happy and stimulating environment built on mutual respect and the belief that the children of today are the community leaders of tomorrow'. Romiley Primary is over-subscribed, receiving 60 applications for 45 place. It received a School Achievement Award from the DfEE in 2001.
