Background:

Brooklands School is situated in a 'pleasant residential' area of Sale. It was founded in 1949 when Cheshire County Council assumed responsibility for a site previously owned by Manchester Grammar School and used as a prep school. The original buildings were extended in 1996 in order to provide a new hall, library, additional classrooms and nursery unit. Within its theme of 'broadening horizens' Brookalnds seeks to 'offer a variety and richness in opportunities for its pupils'. The school is involved in a tripartite curriculum project with schools in Bolognia and Strasbourg. Teachers from the schools have visited Brooklands in order to plan projects based around the theme 'The River and the Region'. The school has a 'flourishing' orchestra which performs annually at the Bowden Festival. Two 'strong' choirs join the orchestra in school fuctions and local activities. Last November they appeared in a concert at the Manchester Evening News Arena. A 'wide range' of sports are played including football, netball, cross country, lacrosse and cricket. In addition to these the school has held local trophies in rugby for the past year. School clubs also include chess, drama, country dancing, art and needlework. A further feature of the school's work is the teaching of Italian to Years 4 and 5. Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to extend their study through a club. This project is sponsored by the Italian consulate in Manchester.
